Why is Reading So Important?

We are living in the information age. No longer is manual labor the backbone of the workforce. Today, it’s information technology driven by computers and the currency of this technology is words. Without the fundamental understanding of those words, a person will have difficulty functioning, let alone succeeding. So it’s never been more important that every child and adult be able to read. Over the past decade alone, the amount of information requiring more advanced levels of comprehension, writing skills, problem solving abilities and critical thinking has grown tremendously. As a result, adults with limited reading skills will have fewer opportunities for success.
Additionally, research shows that adults with limited literacy skills are more likely to live in poverty. One of the strongest predictors of a child’s success in school is the educational attainment of his or her parents. So you can see, not being able to read hurts more than the person who can’t read for themselves.
Reading is important. Whether you’re 6 or 60 it will make a difference in your life, and there is no reason you can’t learn. There is help. All you have to do is take it.
