Athletic Funding / Participation Fees

It cost a lot of money to operate an athletic department. Security, officials, gateworkers, transportation, uniforms, field paint, equipment, and so much more have to be covered for our student-athletes to complete. This page was created to help explain how athletic funding in GSCS works.

How does GSCS fund it's athletic programs? Primarily through gate receipts, player team fees and fundraising. GSCS charges admission to athletic events to help raise funds necessary to operate our programs. Some GSCS sports also charge team fees to join a team. These offset costs not covered by gate receipts or fundraising. Please note GSCS wants all students to participate, so if you are having trouble paying your team fee please see your child's athletic director or principal for help, fundraising opportunities or to set up a payment plan.

GSCS athletic programs do not receive district general funds to operate. While some school systems in the state budget funds to help their athletic programs operate, GSCS has chosen not to fund athletics in this manner. No funds received from taxes, state funds or federal funds directly support athletic activities in GSCS.

GSCS Athletics does receive some indirect support from the district budget. The district budget does pay for coaching supplements (ranging from $700-$4,000 for most middle or high school coaches, depending on grade level and head/assistant coach position). Additionally, the maintenance budget does provide some field maintenance, including cutting the grass on our fields every two weeks, top dressing fields, and performing other minor repairs when needed. Any additional grass cutting, lining the field, and other items like this are the responsibility of each coach or team.

GSCS transportation also does not charge our athletic teams a mileage rate for regular or post-season events. Athletic teams are responsible for paying the bus driver's hourly rate (in 2025, this is $18.68 an hour). During the summer or out-of-season, teams must pay the full field trip rate (in 2025, this is $18.68 an hour plus $2 a mile round-trip).

GSCS also charges all athletes a yearly $50 assessment fee to participate. This fee helps offset the district premium for secondary athletic insurance coverage. As a benefit to student-athlete participants, GSCS purchases secondary athletic insurance to help cover injuries sustained while practicing or competing in GSCS-sponsored athletic events. The $50 assessment fee is paid once per athlete per year. When GSCS received the insurance premium bill, each school is assessed their portion based on the number of athletes participating at that school. The $50 assessment fee pays for the majority of this insurance coverage. Note this is secondary coverage - you can file a claim after your primary insurance has paid out to the provider. It may cover some or all of your out-of-pocket costs, depending on the specifics of the injury. If your child is hurt during a game or practice and you wish to receive information related to the district's secondary athletic insurance coverage, please email your school's athletic director for more information. The school AD and district AD will help prepare the necessary forms for you to submit a claim.
