At the board of education meeting on Tuesday, April 28, 2026, Griffin-Spalding County Schools (GSCS) adopted its first-ever district-wide Literacy Policy, marking a historic step in strengthening literacy achievement for all students.

Policy IFAD established a unified vision for high-quality literacy instruction across all GSCS schools using research-based instructional practices. It emphasized early identification, intervention and support to ensure students develop strong foundational reading and writing skills. The policy prioritized ongoing professional learning and support for teachers and school leaders to strengthen literacy instruction district-wide.

GSCS has held growth in literacy as a priority and primary initiative for several years, with literacy competitions for students such as the GSCS Reading Bowl and Accelerated Reader Program, plus adding book vending machines in each school and in the community. GSCS also has district events to promote literacy such as Real Men Read and Pearls, Pumps and Books, where community leaders read to students at schools. GSCS offers numerous supports targeting literacy growth, including the addition of new literacy specialists at each school to help students grow, to ensure that all are reading on grade-level through the Relentless Readers program. This board policy formalizes the ongoing literacy efforts of GSCS. Board Member R. Syntel Brown was instrumental in drafting this policy.

Board Member Brown said, "It was my pleasure to continue the work of creating policy as an elected school board member. This policy allows us to put our scholars first by focusing on the science of reading in both elementary and secondary education. This policy will ensure educational growth, improved test scores and a positive impact on our students and community for years to come. I'd also like to thank the Center for Strong Public Schools for helping with the initial draft of this policy.”

Last Friday, State School Superintendent Dr. Richard Woods came to Griffin to recognize five GSCS schools as State Literacy Leaders (Beaverbrook Elementary, Crescent Elementary, Futral Road Elementary, Moreland Road Elementary and Rehoboth Road Middle).

GSCS Executive Director of Teacher Leader Effectiveness Dr. Tracy Sims said, " Through this policy, GSCS reaffirms its commitment to preparing all students for academic success and college and career readiness! I am excited about continuing our work in literacy through building strong foundational and disciplinary literacy skills."
