On August 3, the Griffin-Spalding County School System (GSCS) celebrated the first day of the 2026-27 school year with their annual Day One in the District event. Griffin-Spalding Board of Education Member R. Syntel Brown developed this event as a district one initiative, and it has grown into a district-wide event.

GSCS Day One in the District is an initiative designed to welcome students, families and staff back to school. Community Partners in Education, residents, volunteers, stakeholders and elected officials are invited to school campuses to greet students, families and staff by opening car doors at carpool lines and waving to bus riders as they are dropped off at bus ramps. GSCS had approximately 300 volunteer greeters representing over 55 businesses, organizations, civic groups, municipalities and churches participate.

Board of Education Member R. Syntel Brown said, “Day One in the District is an exciting time for scholars, families and staff. We appreciate the 300 community members who volunteered their time to bring the positive energy and welcome everyone back on the first day of school.”
