Congratulations to GHS Class of 2025 Graduate Valeria Herra Contreras for being named Youth Apprenticeship Student of the Year for the Southwest Region! She was previously named GSCS Youth Apprenticeship Student of the Year.
Valeria interned with Crystal Sanchez Insurance Agency with American Family Insurance. She earned her insurance agent’s license while in high school and she is now attending Mercer University. She received a $250 scholarship with this award.
Quanedra Jackson Named Atkinson Elementary Principal. Jackson has been with GSCS for over 10 years. She began her career in education teaching third grade at Anne Street Elementary. She then taught at Orrs Elementary for four years before she advanced to Instructional Coach in 2019. She was named the assistant principal at Orrs Elementary in 2021. Kierra Rojas Named 2025-26 Anne Street Elementary Principal. Rojas has been in education for over 20 years. She has served as the assistant principal at Anne Street Elementary since 2022. Futral Road Elementary Media Specialist Lesie Benfield was recognized as the South Metro Region Media Specialist of the Year at the Annual Georgia Library Media Association Conference in Savannah on June 16-17. Congratulations Leslie! Great Accomplishment!

Hudson Named 2025-26 Principal of Rehoboth Road Middle School. Rusty Hudson has been with GSCS for almost 25 years. He began his career in education as a math teacher and coach serving Griffin High School, Taylor Street Middle School and Spalding High School. Today, State School Superintendent Richard Woods recognized Jackson Road Elementary, Carver Road Middle and Griffin High School as 2023-24 GaDOE Math Leaders for their exceptional achievement or growth in mathematics!
Schools were recognized for achievement or growth in the percentage of students scoring at the Proficient Learner level or above in mathematics. The criteria for the 2023-2024 Math Leader Awards recognize the crucial importance of numeracy skills in fifth and eighth grades and require higher growth from schools with lower achievement levels.
