Dear GSCS Students, Families and Staff,
Some rumors, flyers and social media posts have been circulating regarding an effort to stage a walkout at one or more of our high school campuses. This is not a safe course of action. While Griffin-Spalding County Schools (GSCS) believes in First Amendment rights and personal expression in a peaceful way, we cannot allow a walkout. Our top priority is the safety and security of our students. If students exit the school building, it will disrupt instructional time, and we will not be able to ensure their safety.
Students who wish to express their views on national issues should do so in a way that does not compromise their safety, impact the instructional day or interrupt school operations. Disruption of school operations is against the student code of conduct and may result in disciplinary consequences. Also, any class time missed will not be excused. We acknowledge the value of civic engagement but recommend emailing or calling your congressman or finding other ways to express your beliefs outside of school hours and off school property. Our high school administrative teams are happy to work with student leaders to help them find safe and responsible ways to express themselves.
Parents, please discuss this matter with your students. Parents, students and staff, thank you for helping us maintain safe learning environments in our schools.
Sincerely,
Dr. Donald Warren
GSCS Superintendent

GSCS continues to work closely with Spalding County EMA to monitor the weather conditions. The latest forecast indicates that ice accumulation is possible in Griffin-Spalding County. Out of an abundance of caution, no staff or students should report to school/work on Monday, January 26. A decision regarding Tuesday will be made on Monday. The safety of our students and staff is our top priority. Please use caution and stay safe.

GSCS held its annual spelling bee on January 16, 2026. After 16 spelling and vocabulary rounds, Carver Road Middle School Student Zoe Hatchett won with the word “silhouette.” The district runner-up is Crescent Elementary School Student Lucien Felth.
The annual spelling bee is open to grades 3-8. Each GSCS elementary and middle school held a competition in the Fall to select one student to advance to the district level (and one alternate who participates in the district bee only if the winner is unavailable).
The Griffin-Spalding Chapter of the Georgia Association of Educators (GAE) awarded the winner and the runner-up with trophies and gift cards.
Zoe Hatchett will compete against students from seven other counties in the GAE Regional Spelling Bee on February 28, 2026, in Conyers, GA.
