The GSCS Department of Exceptional Students (DES) staff recently completed the American Red Cross Water Safety Instructor (WSI) certification, a blended learning program that combines online modules with in-person water safety training, instruction, and skill application.
The American Red Cross Swimming and Water Safety program serves a dual purpose:
• To teach people of all ages and abilities how to be safe in, on, and around water
• To provide structured, progressive instruction that develops swimming skills and fosters confident, proficient swimmers
By earning this certification, GSCS DES staff are now equipped to deliver foundational swimming and water safety instruction tailored to the needs of students with disabilities. This initiative supports the district’s commitment to inclusive practices, ensuring that all students can safely and confidently participate in aquatic activities.
Additionally, this training expands opportunities for DES students to participate in Special Olympics swimming events and other adaptive sports programs, promoting physical fitness, confidence, and community involvement.

Today was the first training session for the new GSCS Operation RESET program, which aims to reset expectations among all stakeholders. The first cohort of 20 includes middle school math and ELA teachers. The cohort will participate in two more in-person professional development sessions with occasional small group virtual conferences in between. The trainer for this program is Professor Dr. Megan Mowbray of the Georgia State University Master of Education Program.
Sam Allen, a Griffin High School Graduate (c/o 1954) and a successful investment banker and businessman, has made a generous donation, creating a 1.1-million-dollar designated endowment through Griffin-Spalding Partners in Education. This endowment will create annual funds to be used for professional development to help add new tools to the toolbelts of our teachers.
This is just the beginning of the program, intended to have a long-term positive impact. This endowment will provide funding to annually invest in education in Griffin-Spalding County forever.
GSCS is grateful for this investment in the future of our public education system and is excited about this impactful opportunity!

Today for #GaPreKWeek, all GSCS pre-k students had guest readers come and read this year’s featured book, “Every Amazing Story” by Coy Bowles (from the Zac Brown Band) and Malcolm Mitchell (a former NFL player and literacy advocate). The book encourages children to see themselves as creative storytellers and celebrate their individuality.
GSCS has 22 pre-k classrooms serving over 400 students.
GSCS Pre-K Director Dr. Chris Bearden said, “GSCS Pre-K is excited to have these community leaders share the love of literacy with our pre-k scholars! We look forward to #GaPreKWeek each year to celebrate and showcase the hard work and dedication of our pre-k staff.”
Now in its 15th year, Georgia Pre-K Week raises awareness for the importance of quality early childhood education. Georgia’s Pre-K Program began 30 years ago, in 1992, and has grown from serving 750 children in its first year to approximately 73,000 annually.
